Kununi

Gathering Knowledge, Preserving Heritage
Kununi—Dena’ina for "Gathering of Food"—is a program dedicated to teaching Indigenous knowledge of subsistence hunting and food sovereignty. Rooted in Alaska Native traditions, Kununi empowers students to connect with their heritage and understand the vital role of sustainable practices in caring for the land and community.
This program encourages students to learn from Alaska Native elders and culture bearers and share their own cultural experiences, creating a collaborative and inclusive environment. Through hands-on activities, students gain valuable skills in hunting safety, meat processing, hide tanning, traditional crafting, food harvesting and preservation, and blending cultural practices with modern tools. Kununi creates a space where tradition and innovation meet, inspiring a new generation of stewards and storytellers.
Hands-On Cultural Learning: Participate in the complete cycle of animal harvesting and processing, from hunting safety to meat preparation and hide tanning.

Cultural Sharing and Integration: Engage with Alaska Native elders and culture bearers while sharing personal traditions in a community-focused environment.
Traditional Crafting Meets Innovation: Use sewing machines, sinew, and fur to create traditional crafts while incorporating modern tools and techniques.
